The Del Sol boy’s basketball team had a season to remember, making DSA history and snagging multiple championship titles.
First, the boys competed in the Lake Mead Holiday Tournament where they worked together and fought hard for each victory. They ran the court and shut teams down, grasping the Tournament Championship as the time expired on the scoreboard. This tournament gave the team a positive start to the season and high hopes for more titles in the future.
As the season progressed, the team rolled out a ten-game winning streak that gave them the momentum to fight and win when the State Tournament was on the line.
On February 20, Del Sol faced Chaparral for the Region Semifinal, which was one of the most important games for DSA. With a victory, Del Sol would be awarded a chance to compete at the State Tournament. After finding the bottom of the net and playing stellar defense, Del Sol took an 81-70 victory over Chaparral to win the Sunset League Title and begin their journey toward the State Title.
“The game against Chaparral in the Region Semifinal was the most significant game because by winning, Del Sol clinched its first-ever berth into the State Tournament,” Head Coach Stuart Humes said.
The team then battled Boulder City at Pahrump Valley for the Region Championship. This game was close as each team went neck-and-neck, sending the game into overtime. DSA fought hard for the victory and came out on top, snagging the 64-62 win to clinch the Region Championship, which was another first for Del Sol, and advance to the State Finals.
The Dragons then travelled to Reno to face Elko High School for the Championship. Unfortunately, DSA fell short as they suffered a 73-65 loss.
“We achieved our goals of winning league and the region, but fell short on our goal to win the State Championship,” Coach Humes said.
However, although the Dragons failed to reach the ultimate goal of winning the State Championship, Coach Humes is beyond proud of the boys and will always remember this season.
“What a great season for the Del Sol Academy men’s basketball program,” Coach Humes said. “Winning [the] league and region championships and representing our school in the State Tournament is an experience we will never forget… I love these boys and I am grateful to them for all their hard work and dedication to our basketball program. It was quite a ride and I enjoyed watching them succeed as a team.”
As the season comes to an end, the team is excited to send Nati Asfaw to the College of Southern Nevada to play basketball on a scholarship. They are also excited to start preparing for next season by starting basketball open gym/intramurals at the end of March and improving individual skills as well as providing opportunities for the players to play in team competitions.
All in all, Coach Humes is proud of DSA’s boy’s basketball team and will always remember the memories made this season. Great work this season, Dragons!
